LG Cookie and Lollipop phones available in new colors

lg_lollipop.jpg Thanks to the success of the Cookie series, LG have decided to give back something to its Korean fans. They have come up with two new exciting colors for the series: Titan Gray and Black Gold. Both look absolutely bold and unisexual and can possibly get the Cookie a new audience altogether. It will come with a 3 inch WQVGA touch screen with Widget UI, a 3MP camera, Bluetooth, FM radio and a media player. Also, LG has dropped upon us two new shades for the Lollipop, and as we could expect it to be, they are bright and dashing. Hot Red and Citron Green is something that really relates to the audience that the LG Lollipop connects to.

Surely, this indicates that LG has been concentrating on improvements to existing versions of their phones, in addition to putting in some new releases. Nice!

LG launches Prada II teaser site, matching Bluetooth watch

Not that it wasn't official already or anything, but nothing demonstrates dedication to a product like an exclusive home on the web. Yep, LG has just launched a standalone microsite for the altogether sexy Prada II, and while you already know about the specs -- HSDPA, WiFi, 5-megapixel camera, 3-inch 400 x 240 pixel capacitive multi-touch display and quad-band GSM connectivity -- you probably weren't aware of the matching Prada Link Bluetooth watch. As you'd expect, the timepiece syncs with your Prada II and shows your incoming calls / texts, and we'll go out on a limb and presume that it tells time, too. Sadly, the tidbits we're most interested in (a release date and pricing) aren't clearly available on the site, but we'll be refreshing like madmen hoping for that to change.

LG launches KF300 Wine phone in Japan and Europe

What, you didn't realize that LG was shipping its KF300 Wine phone in Europe and Japan today? Just open your eyes -- you can probably see the screen from your current position. This easy-to-see handset, unashamedly aimed at folks 30 years or older, is being paradoxically shown off by a couple of minors (just a hunch, folks) as it makes its official debut in the aforesaid nations. Interested consumers can pick one up now in white / gold / pink (Japan) or pink / dark purple / black (Europe) for an undisclosed amount.

LG reveals XD1 family of portable hard drives

Although Western Digital seems to have the portable hard drive sector all wrapped up, LG's looking to snag a bit of that market share by introducing a new line of stylish alternatives. Each member of the XD1 family possesses a 2.5-inch HDD with a SATA II interface and a USB 2.0 port, and just in case black isn't your bag, you can expect a red wine colored version as well. For now, we'll have to live without a price or release date, but you can look forward to units arriving in 120GB, 160GB, 250GB and 320GB sizes sometime in the future.

Review: LG's KU990 Viewty with 3" Touchscreen

LG KU990 Viewty

The Viewty, also known as the KU990, is LG's new high-end camera phone, a candybar style device with an impressively large touch sensitive display. Seemingly designed to rival Apple's iPhone, the device is very minimalist, sporting only a handful of physical buttons. Available on most networks within the UK, and at far more reasonable prices than Apple's offering, could the Viewty be a serious contender for the iPhone? We've been lucky enough to get our hands on one to find out.

Physical Aspects

At first glance, the Viewty gives an impression of quality and style, thanks to its sleek lines and predominantly black exterior. Chrome edging ties the design together, giving the device a very understated, yet eye-catching appearance.

Thankfully, the impression of quality doesn't end there and the Viewty feels just as expensive as it looks, with no loose parts or creaky covers. It measures a respectable 103.5mm x 54.4mm x 14.8mm (4.1" x 2.1" x .6") in size, making it quite a slim device when considering everything that's crammed into its sleek exterior, and it feels lighter than you'd expect at 112g (3.9oz). One of the first things you'll notice with the Viewty is the huge 3" 240x400 pixel WQVGA touch sensitive display, capable of showing 262,000 colors. The display is very nice to look at with one of the brighter themes activated, and can be easily read, even in direct sunlight. To activate the display you'll need to press one of the few physical buttons on the phone, which allows you to unlock it. Doing so will activate the display, showing you a 3x3 grid of icons, with a row of four more icons beneath it.

LG includes a small, extendable stylus on the Viewty. In spite of that, the Viewty can be operated adequately without it, though the screen reacts much better to fingernail taps than inputs with finger tips. Users with large fingers may find the stylus necessary for some of the small on-screen buttons, as well. LG have addressed the lack of physical buttons on the Viewty's display by providing vibration feedback, meaning that every time you tap the screen, the phone vibrates subtly to acknowledge your input. The only problem is that sometimes the Viewty will vibrate to acknowledge an input, but won't actually execute the command. This happens most often when trying to move backwards in the menu by using the "back" button in the bottom right corner of the screen. The phone doesn't seem to have this problem when the stylus is used.

Since it lacks a physical keypad or keyboard, text input on the Viewty has to be handled by the touchscreen. There are 4 methods available: a virtual alphanumeric keypad, a virtual QWERTY keyboard, and two handwriting recognition modes, one that works with an input box, the other that works anywhere on the screen. The virtual keypad uses T9 predictive text. The keyboard suffers from small on-screen key size, even though the phone is held horizontally in this mode, and is less than ideal. The two handwriting recognition modes work decently, but are not capable of handling cursive script well, instead working best with individual characters. It's worth noting that not all modes are available for use in all parts of the device.

Despite the display controlling most aspects of the phone, LG have included a handful of physical keys on the Viewty for some of the simpler functions. There are dedicated call send and end keys, as well as a hardware C (clear) key that can be used to delete text. A very stiff camera key and a lock/unlock key are located on the right edge of the phone. A scroll dial on the back of the Viewty can be used for adjusting call volume and navigating through menus, but we found it to be a bit finicky in use. A button on the top of the phone releases the rear cover, which exposes the battery, SIM card, and microSD card slot.

At the top of the phone is the button that releases the Viewty's metal rear cover, which easily pops off for access to the battery, SIM card bay and memory card slot. The memory card slot takes up to 2GB micro SD cards, but unfortunately the battery needs to be removed to allow access to both the micro SD card and sim card, creating extra fuss for multiple SIM card/memory card users. On the top left corner of the device is a loop for a lanyard or the stylus, which came attached to our review handset via a cord protruding from the stylus end-cap. Below this, on the top left side of the phone is the charging/headset port, covered neatly by a small plastic sliding door.

Multimedia phones boost LG's earnings

http://www.modernlifeisrubbish.co.uk/images/photographs/lg-shine-2.jpg
LG Electronics Inc, the best performing stock among the world's major mobilephone makers, reported its second-highest profit in almost four years, driven by sales of its touch-screen Viewty and Voyager handsets.

First-quarter net income was 422.2 billion won ($427 million) during the first quarter, compared with a 122.6 billion won loss a year earlier, Seoul-based LG said in a statement yesterday. Profit missed the median analyst estimate in a Bloomberg survey after LG booked 236 billion won in currency-related losses.

Operating profit beat estimates and mobilephone shipments jumped 54 percent to a record, indicating LG may have passed Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications Ltd as the fourth-largest vendor. Its lineup of touch-screen and multimedia models will probably help the Korean company overtake Motorola Inc as the industry's third-largest producer this year, according to Merrill Lynch & Co.

"The figures look very good," said Choi Min Jai, who owns LG shares amid the $3 billion he oversees at KTB Asset Management Co in Seoul. "The company's making good products that sell well, and some stumbling on the part of Motorola and Sony Ericsson also helps."

LG shares closed 0.4 percent lower at 132,500 won on the Korea Exchange, paring a 3 percent drop earlier. The stock has risen 33 percent this year, the best performer among the world's five-largest mobile phone makers.

Earnings from mobile phones quadrupled to 444 billion won. Sales rose 36 percent to 3.2 trillion won.

Analysts at Citigroup Inc, Morgan Stanley and at least seven other brokers have raised their price targets on LG's stock in the past month, citing gains in the mobilephone business.

LG is the first major listed mobile-phone maker to report earnings for the latest quarter. Nokia Oyj, Samsung Electronics Co and Motorola Inc are scheduled to disclose earnings in April.

The Korean company said it sold 24.4 million phones during the quarter, exceeding the 22 million that Sony Ericsson projected it would sell. The venture between Sony Corp and Ericsson AB said on March 19 that first-quarter earnings and revenue would fall because of slower handset sales.

Profit from home appliances fell 15 percent to 144 billion.

The display division turned profitable for the first time in six quarters, led by flat-panel television sales. Profit at the business was 1 billion won.

Contributions from the company's liquid-crystal display unit, LG Display Co, helped boost profit.

LG VX9700

Can't leave the comforts of your speedy, reliable network, but aren't ready to carry the brick-like Voyager to appease that touchscreen hankering? Verizon might finally have a solution with the LG VX9700, which just passed the FCC. The above leaked image of the phone shows it to be similar to LG's Prada phone, but apparently there's no designer branding to be had here -- just like AT&T's upcoming Prada-inspired LG Vu. Other than that, erm, innovative menu, rumored infos include a 3.2 megapixel camera, micro USB, microSDHC, and an on-screen QWERTY keyboard for text input. Word is the phone was slated for the end of the month, but now might be delayed until April. We suppose we'll be finding out soon enough.

LG enV2, Motorola W755 in glorious detail

For any enV owners out there who managed to not splurge on a Voyager, it looks like you could end up being rewarded here something fierce. Verizon's true enV replacement, the VX9100, has now found its way into some glamorous press shots -- and while we're sure that reaction's going to be mixed, we're really digging the super-simple candybar appearance when the QWERTY clamshell is in its upright and locked position. Looks like it'll come in at least two colors to start -- black and maroon -- and we're also hearing that the name "enV2" is being tossed around in Verizon's documentation (surprise, surprise). Careful observers will note that the phone is sporting a USB port (either mini or micro, we're not sure) on the side, a promising sign that we'll finally be able to ditch those custom LG chargers in the not-too-distant future.

We also got hold of a portion of the Motorola W755's user guide -- nothing too inspiring, we suppose, but if there's one thing Verizon needs, it's another midrange flip. We kid, we kid.

LG Viewty

As nice of a phone as the LG Viewty may be, it gets a little boring in black after a while. Then, another little while after that, it gets boring in silver. It's cool, though, because LG's just released a pink version for its domestic market -- and it can keep doing this all day, if you catch our drift. The company is throwing around the term "Pink Beauty" for this particular version (which seems both appropriate and a little disturbing at the same time) and is targeting it squarely at the fairer sex. A little presumptuous, perhaps? Look for it to start selling tomorrow for 730,000 won (about $752).
